BPW VICTORIA  POLICY AND ADVOCACY

BPW Victoria Policy Working Group

In 2017, at a BPW Victoria State Forum, members identified the following key policy priorities for women in BPW Victoria:

1.       Women’s Safety at Work
2.       Leadership at all Career Stages
3.       Women’s Financial Independence at all Career Stages
4.       Women’s Health.

Representatives from three of the Victorian clubs (South-West, Swan Hill and Melbourne) have since been working to develop policy statements outlining BPW Victoria position on these themes.  The aim of the statements is to provide clubs with contemporary research and information and links to resources to assist their efforts in local communities, including organising events, responding to media and advocating for change.

The following two statements have been completed and endorsed by BPW Victoria and can be downloaded here:

  • Building women’s leadership at all career stages:
  • Supporting health and wellbeing at all career stages

Further work is currently underway to develop policy papers for the remaining two themes with the aim that the final statements will be available at the National Conference to be held in October 2021.

Building Women's Leadership at all Career Stages

Behaviour in the workplace is not always fair, rational or evidence-based. Lack of access to opportunities can be the result of discriminatory practices that are overt or the result of social stereotypes that individuals form outside their own conscious awareness. Inequality of opportunity can inhibit women’s ability to achieve leadership positions as it can actively prevent women from obtaining leadership positions, affect women’s confidence and deprive them of role models.

It can also perpetuate the notion that women are not capable of assuming senior jobs. In order to promote equality of opportunity, there should be a focus on ensuring that all women and men are treated fairly at work and that human rights and non-discrimination are respected and supported (Women’s Empowerment Principle 2).

Educational, training and professional development opportunities should also be provided for women (Women’s Empowerment Principle 4) at all stages of their career.

Why is this an area of focus?
What are the barriers?
What are the opportunities?
