Speaking at the BPW Sydney International Dinner in 1975 Ruth Ross said that “1975 is International Year of the Woman and the fact that the United Nations considered it necessary to designate a year for women is itself an admission that there is a pressing need for action in this particular area of human rights for half of the world’s population.”

Ruth Ross believed that the task of BPW was to cause women to be aware, to help them break off the chains which bind their consciences and to help them break through the structures which keep them from participating as a full human being, determining their own and their societies’ destinies.

Ruth Ross believed that in BPW we must preserve the standards and if we are to keep BPW developing, we must throughout the whole of our organisation have groups of active people study the problems by and large in small groups, bringing the results of their studies and investigations to larger groups that is to the clubs, to the divisions and to Federation, so that the Federation with all the power that it can muster can put before the appropriate people, through the press and other channels the results of its findings.

Ruth Ross had two favourite sayings:

“Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm”. Emerson

“Let us go hand in hand, not one before the other”. Shakespeare
